MAUI avatars: Mirroring the user's sensed emotions via expressive multi-ethnic facial avatars

چکیده
2 Abstract— In this paper we describe the Multimodal Affective User Interface (MAUI) we created to capture its users' emotional physiological signals via wearable computers and visualize the categorized signals in terms of recognized emotion. MAUI aims at 1) giving feedback to the users about their emotional states via various modalities (e.g. mirroring the user's facial expressions and describing verbally the emotional state via an anthropomorphic avatar) and 2) animating the avatar's facial expressions based on the user's captured signals. We first describe a version of MAUI which we developed as an in-house development tool for developing and testing affective computing research. We also discuss applications for which building intelligent user interfaces similar to MAUI can be useful and we suggest ways of adapting the MAUI approach to fit those specific applications.

Emotionally Expressive Avatars for Chatting, Learning and Therapeutic Intervention
We present our work on emotionally expressive avatars, animated virtual characters that can express emotions via facial expressions. Because these avatars are highly distinctive and easily recognizable, they may be used in a range of applications. In the first part of the paper we present their use in computer mediated communication where two or more people meet in virtual space, each represent...
متن کاملShow Me or Tell Me: Designing Avatars for Feedback
Avatars can be employed as a motivational tool, for example, allowing non-verbal communication that can be close to human communication. We describe two lab studies where we presented participants with avatars that communicated verbally via text and visually via expressions. In the first study, participants rated five different categories of captions and corresponding avatars. Results showed th...
متن کاملDesigning an Expressive Avatar of a Real Person
The human ability to express and recognize emotions plays an important role in face-to-face communication, and as technology advances it will be increasingly important for computer-generated avatars to be similarly expressive. In this paper, we present the detailed development process for the Lifelike Responsive Avatar Framework (LRAF) and a prototype application for modeling a specific individ...
متن کاملCartoon-like Avatar Generation Using Facial Component Matching
Nowadays, avatars are widely used in games and Internet environments. Especially, video game consoles such as Wii (Nintendo) use avatars for representing the user's alter ego. There are several ways to generate avatars. Most existing games or Internet services provide manual systems for generating avatars. Many researchers have suggested automatic avatar generation methods, most of which genera...
متن کاملThe Neural Correlates of Ethnic and Gender Similarity and Dissimilarity with Avatars in Online Shopping Environments
Virtual sales assistants with human-like interfaces (“avatars”) help consumers make better choices with less cognitive effort in online shopping environments. Following similarity-attraction theory, such avatars must be similar to consumers’ ethnicity and gender to be liked and used. In contrast, dissimilarity-repulsion theory posits that dissimilarity causes consumers to avoid avatars that mis...
